The breeze blew lightly and the sunlight shimmered upon the Summerfest 2011 event. The widespread grass area, located near the Ventura Unified School District at 255 West Stanley Avenue, was decorated with a variety of booths, inflatables, and stages for dance performers.
Some booths consisted of healthy snacks from fresh fruits to health-conscious smoothies from Robeks. Other booths had bright, colorful paints for people to choose which face-paint design they want. There were booths set up from Ballet Academy of Ventura, Boy Scouts, and even a booth for physical therapy.
“This is the first year that they [Summerfest] as allowed student groups to participate as a fundraiser. The easy part is organizing the supplies and the schedule for workers at our booth. Most of the energy is done on the day,” said Sharon Hawkins, a parent that coordinated a face-painting booth.
Among the countless booths scattered around, Summerfest held a couple fitness activities such as a 5k run/walk and an obstacle sponsored by Boys Scout. A cluster of kids ran around playing soccer with smiles plastered onto their faces; and a ball was seen bouncing over and over a net as kids began a volleyball game.
Jody, a resident in Ventura, said “This is my first time [at Summerfest]. I like that there are a variety of booths and things going on. My two kids were actually in a gymnastic performance here.”
Summerfest brought continuous rays of smiles as people of all ages came together to be active and advocate a healthier lifestyle.
